In addition to lessons on better picture making, we’ll discuss and implement rules of composition, and how best to approach subjects and assignments. You’ll have a great weekend getting to know all that your camera can help you achieve.

Documentary Photography: Portrait of a Small Town

W. Keith McManus All Levels $430

The workshop will explore documentary photography by doing a visual portrait of a small, rural mountain town near Touchstone. Students, with the help of the instructor, will devise a concept for their project. With daily visits during the week, the photographers will concentrate on their assigned subject. The students will be encouraged to photograph aspects of the town that most interest them. Students using film should be prepared to use 1-hour photo-lab processing. Students using digital should bring a lap top with image editing software installed. I will plan to provide a projector for digital images. Each day will begin with review plans and the evening will close with a group criticism.

Keith McManus has been a documentary and magazine photojournalist for over 40 years. He was an editor at U.S. News & World Report and has been covering national politics since the 1970’s. He has also been full-time faculty at the Rochester Institute of Technology’s School of Photographic Arts & Sciences, adjunct at the Visual Studies Workshop and summer workshop facilitator there. He began doing documentary films in 1987, co-producing one of the earliest PBS documentaries about AIDS. Keith’s first love is small town-rural America.
