have the opportunity to try the traditional construction of stained glass
designs using the fluid application of solder on copper foil. Open to all

Stained Glass Beginnings

Have you always wanted to learn the art of stained glass? Join in for a week of learning the basics of glass design and construction in the Tiffany method and lead came method. Learn about the terms, tools, supplies, patterning, and techniques for artistically creating your own original stained glass projects! We will take a field trip to Youghiogheny Glass for supplies and glass. Supplies can start at $60 for your basic tools, on up, depending on your individual project and preferences. Once you learn these basic skills, your stained glass projects are limited only by your imagination!
Diane Bauerle is a self-taught, independent stained glass artisan and has been making her glass creations for the past 25 years. In her home studio she creates a variety of glass art including, lamps, windows, stepping-stones, 3-dimensional projects, and restoration and repair of antique windows and lamps. She builds custom pieces for commissioned work both locally and afar. Diane lives, works, and plays in the beautiful mountains that surround Touchstone.

Bead Maker’s Reunion

On our 15th annual bead maker’s reunion, we will review bead shaping, surface decoration, encasing, cane making, the use of enamels, paints, metals, fuming, and anything else that occurs to us. I will be focusing on soft glass, but borosilicate is also welcome.
Kate Fowle Meleney has been making beads since 1991 and teaching at home and abroad since 1992. Recent invitations have taken her to Australia and Japan to share her lampworking skills. She has produced three DVDs on the subject and contributed numerous instructional articles to lampworking publications. Her work can be seen at www.katefowle.com.

Introduction to Glass Blowing

Learn the basics of glassblowing in one week. The environment will be relaxed, and the work will be intense. We will cover all the basic offhand glassworking technique time allows. This includes gathering and blocking, shaping, blowing bubbles, transferring and finishing, color, and more. Students will take home many pieces including paperweights, cups, vases, bowls, plates, and anything else you want to make. Bring proper clothing and eye protection, including long pants, cotton T-shirts, a long-sleeve cotton shirt, good close-toed leather or other durable shoes and dark glasses or sunglasses. No synthetic materials near the heat; they melt!
Ed Francis is currently the head of glass studies at Tidewater Community College in Portsmouth, VA. He owns and operates Off Center Glass, LLC, making large-scale commissioned glass installations. Off Center Glass has a line of blown glass giftware sold at many retail outlets across the country and also makes custom lighting fixtures and chandeliers. In addition, Off Center Glass has a portable glassblowing studio which is used throughout the year for on-site glassblowing demonstration and instruction.

Glass Blowing: Hot Molten Madness

This course is all about learning the basics techniques of manipulating hot molten glass. Students will learn how to gather hot glass from a furnace, shape it, and sculpt it into desired solid and blown forms. The workshop will cover how stainless steel tools, wood blocks, and wet newspapers are used to shape the glass. We will have a small furnace of molten glass, two glory holes, and an annealing oven. All tools and materials will be provided. This is an opportunity to have a unique experience and depart with a new understanding of glass as well as making some cool things to take home with you. No experience required; all that is required is a lot of energy and a pair of sunglasses, long sleeves, and long pants.
Ryan Gothrup discovered a love for glass at the Indianapolis Art Center where he studied under nationally recognized glass artist Ed Francis. Gothrup received a BFA in glass from Kent State University in 2004, and is now attending Virginia Commonwealth University for his graduate degree in glass. His glasswork has been exhibited in galleries throughout the country, and he runs his own business as a production glassblower.

A Wild Flower Glass Bead Workshop

We will explore the wonderful world of wild flowers and botanicals using various tools including the Leonardo Petal Pullers, pressers, rufflers, tweezers, and picks. Petal tools (rufflers) will be available to use in class. Learn how to make various styles of sculpted flowers and leaves using hard and soft glass. I will show you how to make my six-petal flowers and such flowers as wild violet, poppy, columbine, and trillium among others. You will make handmade petal cane and any components to complete your flowers. Come discover the many ways of making sculpted flowers!
Karen Leonardo has written the book Creating Lampwork Beads for Jewelry and is a featured artist in the book The Art and Soul of Glass Beads, as well as contributing to other internationally recognized books. She invented the Leonardo Petal Tools and has been making beads professionally since 1997. Karen has won various awards for her beads and jewelry and her business accomplishments, and she was part of the International Who’s Who of Business and Professional Women and International Entrepreneurs. The Highs and Lows of Heated Glass

Glass lovers will cover the highs and lows (of temperature, that is) of glass in the kiln. The lows range from enameling and painting on glass in the 1000-degree span, to the highs in excess of 2000 degrees - covering fusing, slumping, and casting. Completed projects may be functional or just plain funky. They can become an inclusion of a future leaded project or something that you will use to serve caviar.
Regina MacDowell has been a practicing ecclesiastic glass artist for 20 years. Her training was completed in the European fashion, and she has constructed and deconstructed windows in churches, temples, businesses, entrances, and foyers throughout the country. She lives with her husband Jay and daughters Cecilia and Veronica in Greene County, PA, but she works alone and likes it that way. She has taught exclusively at Touchstone for about a decade.

Minding the Mandrel: Making Beads, Marbles, and Sculpting Glass

Play with molten glass by learning torch-working skills in an enjoyable atmosphere. Class focus will be on making marbles, cane, and beads both on and off the mandrel as a foundation to sculpting glass. Safety, studio setup, and the history of glass working will also be addressed.
Michael Mangiafico has been working with glass for over 20 years. He owns and runs his own glass studio in Pittsburgh, PA. He has exhibited and taught across the US and is a member of the Glass Art Society, the International Society Of Glass Beadmakers, and the Pittsburgh Craftsmen's Guild.

You will learn that all that glitters is not just gold, but dichro, silver, reactive frits, and so much more!
This class is designed for the beadmaker who wants to add that extra sparkle of glimmer to their beads. Many beadmakers hesitate to work in fun, but expensive materials, such as dichroic glass, because they are difficult to work with. This class will de-mystify these hard-to-handle materials with tips and tricks that will give your beads the glitter you are looking for. Learn to work with dichroic glass; metals for layering and inclusions – copper, silver, gold; metals for fuming – silver and gold; enamels; frits and powders; fine silver wire for granulation; copper sheet, wire and mesh and more! We will also cover clean casing and other decorative techniques to add that extra sparkle to your work.
Lisa St. Martin has been working with hot glass for over a quarter of a century. She is classically trained in art education at the University of Maryland, and with graduate courses in glass technology at the University of Kansas. Lisa received a grant from the Nation Endowment for the Arts that allowed her to study glassblowing and engraving at the Jon Meyer Studio and with artisans from Stuben in Corning. With work all over the world and in many books, Lisa’s time is spent refining her craft, developing new techniques, and teaching. Her studio is located in Northern Virginia where she tries to keep husband, two sons, and three cats at bay!
